There are the Madagascar hissing cockroaches: wingless, two-inch-long lozenges with armadillo-like shells in shades of ochre and rust. There are desert cockroaches who can absorb water vapor from the atmosphere, and Central American giant cave cockroaches, with a highly developed immune system similar to that of complex vertebrates. There are more than 4,500 species of cockroaches in the known world, from neon bright Cuban cockroaches known as “green bananas,” to brick-colored Turkestan cockroaches nicknamed “rusty reds,” from death’s head cockroaches with skull-shaped markings on their thoraces to Indian domino cockroaches, jet black save for seven white pips on their carapace. ![]()
